For a better knowledge of migrants.
The People’s Palace meeting room hosted a two-day training on data collection and data connections between the different institutions on Sunday. Organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in close collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, this training was aimed at defining the profiles of migrants who pass through our country, and the reliability of data on migration.
Due to its geographical position, the Republic of Djibouti remains a transit destination for a large number of migrants wishing to reach the countries of the Arabian Peninsula. This phenomenon of irregular migration also affects part of the Djibouti youth looking for a better future.
However, the lack of figures on Djiboutian candidates for irregular migration or emigrants is p04roblematic. Hence the importance of collecting and sharing data on regular and irregular migration.
The question was at the heart of the training that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized from Sunday 1st to Monday 2nd October 2017 at the People’s Palace. And this, it should be added, in close collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior. The training was led by two international consultants, Michel Poulain and Anne Herm.
The participants came from a number of ministerial departments, such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Labor for Administration Reform, the Ministry of Women and the Family, the State Secretariat for Social Affairs, ADDS, the DISED, the National Police, but also the National Army, the Gendarmerie, the Coast Guard …
During these two days, the trainers and learners raised the conditions for optimal management of data on irregular and regular migration and for a better sharing of this information between the concerned institutions. Both have sifted the sources of statistical and administrative data on international migration. They also examined the impact of the data available in Djibouti to describe international migration and foreign-born populations.
This training is part of the project entitled « Capacity building of the Government of Djibouti to better collect and analyze data and statistics on migration ». This project started in November 2016 and concerns data collection on migration flows and profiles of migrants.
